Corticosteroid Injections for hand and upper limb conditions- Frequently asked questions

Posted on: | Category:

This blog provides a quick outline of the most commonly asked questions, helping you make an informed decision about whether a steroid injection is right for you. Please see our blog Understanding Corticosteroid Injections in Hand Therapy for a more in-depth understanding of this topic.

What is a corticosteroid injection?

A corticosteroid injection contains an anti-inflammatory medication that is placed directly into a painful or inflamed area to help reduce pain, swelling, and irritation.

What conditions are steroid injections commonly used for?

They are commonly used for conditions such as trigger finger, carpal tunnel syndrome, De Quervain’s tenosynovitis, tennis elbow (lateral epicondylitis), Arthritis and other inflammatory hand and upper-limb conditions.

How does a steroid injection help?

The injection reduces inflammation in the affected area, which can relieve pain and allow improved movement and function. This often makes it easier to engage in rehabilitation exercises and daily activities.

Will the injection cure my condition?

Steroid injections are not usually a cure, but they can significantly reduce symptoms. When combined with hand therapy such as splinting, exercises, education, and activity modification, they can support recovery and improve long-term outcomes.

How quickly will I feel relief?

Some people notice improvement within a few days, while for others it may take up to 1–4 weeks. Temporary soreness at the injection site is common in the first 24–48 hours.

Is the injection painful?

Most patients describe the injection as uncomfortable rather than painful. The procedure is quick, and any discomfort usually settles shortly afterwards.

Are steroid injections safe?

When administered appropriately by a trained clinician, steroid injections are considered safe. Your therapist will assess whether an injection is suitable for you and discuss potential risks before proceeding.

What are the possible side effects?

Side effects are uncommon but may include temporary pain flare, skin colour changes, skin thinning, or tendon irritation. Serious complications are rare but your Occupational Therapist will discuss all side effects with you when considering a steroid injection.

How many injections can I have?

There is usually a limit to how many injections can be given in the same area. This depends on the condition, your response, and clinical guidelines, and will be discussed with you individually.

Will I need hand therapy after the injection?

Yes, hand therapy is an important part of treatment. People often search for hand physio, or hand Rehab when seeking therapy after a steroid injection. Hand Therapy helps address the underlying cause of the problem and supports long-term recovery, not just short-term symptom relief.

Do I need to rest after the injection?

You may be advised to rest the area for a short period (usually 24–48 hours), followed by a gradual return to activity with guided exercises and modifications.

Is a steroid injection right for everyone?

Not always. Some conditions or medical factors may mean an injection is not appropriate. The hand therapist/Occupational Therapist will complete a thorough assessment and discuss all treatment options with you.
