Custom Splinting & Orthotics
A custom-made splint, or orthosis, is one of the most effective tools in hand therapy. Unlike off-the-shelf supports, a custom splint is fabricated by your therapist during your appointment for a perfect fit. It is designed to protect healing tissues, reduce pain, support joints, and gently guide your hand or wrist into the ideal position for recovery.
When is a Splint Recommended?
Your occupational therapist or consultant may recommend a splint to help manage a wide range of conditions, including:
- Post-Injury or Post-Surgery: To immobilise and protect a specific area while it heals.
- Arthritis & Chronic Conditions: To reduce inflammation, provide pain relief, and support joints during daily activities.
- Tendon & Ligament Issues: To rest overworked tendons or prevent unwanted movement.
- Contracture Management: To gently stretch and improve the range of motion in stiff joints.
Types of Splints We Provide
We offer two main types of support, depending on your clinical needs:
- Prefabricated Splints: We stock a range of high-quality, soft prefabricated splints that are ideal for providing general support and comfort for common conditions.
- Custom-Made Thermoplastic Splints: For a precise, tailored fit, your therapist will mould a low-temperature thermoplastic material directly to your hand, wrist, or arm. This creates a rigid, lightweight, and highly effective orthosis that is specific to your anatomy and recovery goals.
The cost of your splint will vary depending on its complexity and the materials required. This will be discussed and agreed with you during your assessment.
